Life-threatening emergency999

Request an ambulance and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.

Urgent medical advice111

For urgent help when the situation is not life-threatening.

Purpose

Prepared to act.

An emergency situation may occur during training, competitive events, travel or accommodation. This plan guides Iconz Experience staff, visiting players, visiting teams and accompanying personnel in the event of a serious injury or potential medical emergency.

A serious injury or emergency is any condition where life or limb may be in danger, or there is a risk of permanent impairment without immediate medical intervention.

Emergency procedure

Call. Explain.
Stay on the line.

When calling 999, provide

  1. Your name and role with Iconz Experience.
  2. The name of the injured or ill person.
  3. A brief description of the emergency and the person’s condition.
  4. The exact location, including the hotel name and full address where applicable.
  5. Your contact telephone number and any other information requested.

Do not end the call until instructed to do so by the emergency operator.

Serious injury

Recognise the risk.

Conditions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Cervical spine injury
  • Head injury
  • Shock
  • Fractures
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Serious illness
  • Severe bleeding
  • Significant allergic reaction
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Any other potentially life-threatening condition

Where a spinal or serious neck injury is suspected, do not move the person unless there is an immediate danger requiring evacuation.

Primary care provider

Lead the immediate response.

  • Assess the scene and make sure it is safe before entering.
  • Check the individual’s level of consciousness, airway, breathing and circulation.
  • Provide basic life support, CPR or use an AED if appropriately trained and required.
  • Call 999 where an ambulance is required and follow the appropriate first-aid procedure.
  • Keep the injured person calm, maintain their airway where necessary and keep bystanders clear.
  • Inform the appropriate people, including parents or guardians where appropriate.
  • Provide a detailed handover to emergency medical personnel and document the incident afterwards.

Support personnel

Clear roles.
One response.

Medical / first aid personnel

Assist the primary care provider in managing the injured or ill person.

Coaches / tour staff

Keep players away from the emergency area and assist the primary care provider where requested.

Security / hotel staff

Control the scene, assist with access and direct emergency services to the location.

Players

Remain clear of the emergency area and follow instructions from Iconz Experience staff.

Communication

One person leads.

Clear communication between medical staff, coaches and support personnel is essential. Use the agreed communication method during a sporting event or training session. If radios are unavailable, use mobile phones.

One person should direct the emergency response and communicate with emergency services. Other personnel should be given clear, delegated roles.

On arrival, external emergency personnel should be told

  • What happened and the individual’s condition.
  • What treatment has already been provided.
  • Any known medical conditions, allergies or medication information.
  • The individual’s emergency contact details.

Hotel procedure

Know the building.

Upon arrival, the tour leader and staff should confirm the hotel name, full address, reception number, fire alarm procedure, emergency exits, assembly point, first-aid equipment, AED location where available, staff room numbers and emergency contacts.

During a fire or hotel emergency, follow the hotel’s evacuation procedure and hotel staff instructions. Do not use lifts during a fire evacuation unless directed by emergency personnel.
